SECOND DAY

(rBESfI ASSOCIATION TEI.T.GHAMB.I TRENTHAM, Fobruary 29. To-day has been ono of the finest shooting days experienced at Trontham for several years, and as a ctmscqucnee tho shooting at all ranges has boon phenomenal. The special portion of the programme was the teams match for tho Colonial Ammunition Company's handsome 75 guinea silver cup. Four teams had entered, but tho contest for tho trophy was left to the Opaki and Karori Rifle Clubs. More than a usual amount of interest was taken in the event, as tho Karori Club had already won tho -cup twico and another win would make it their absolute property. The competition is ono that represents as far as possible,' absolute service conditions. Each team consists of twelve men and a commander. Theso ,aro formed up at about 800 yards from the targets, which consist of a small group of figures. Advances aro made at irregular intervals between 800 and 500 yards, and at each halt, which is regulated by the umpire, the target appears for 15 seconds, each man firing not moro than one shot at each halt. . There aro ten intervals whioh means that each team fires ten shots. Each hit on tho figures counts ono. Tho Karori team put up 19 hits or 16 per cont ; tlie Opaki team getting 17 hits. This not only ga\-e the match but tho cup to-tho ICarori team; In this match tho Karori team proved the value of previous training, as every man_ in tho team had had volunteer training, the average length of service being 9 years. Tho.team consisted of H. Plimmer, F. W. Wickens, A. Caldwell, H. Marshall; A. T. Fellows, W. Chirnside, H. Bullford, W. E. Aston, H. W. Croxton, L. Hugo, W. Judd and F. P. Halpin. In addition to tho teams' match there wero extra matches at 900. 1000, 600, 800 and 1000 yards. Hero the shooting far surpassed anything which has ever been done on any range in New Zealand. In the morning tho 900 and 1000 yards wero taken. At the 900 yards C. Speck (Stratford) and Maroozi (Ekctahuna) each put up a possible, and thero : wero seven 34's, among them being Masofield (Sounds). At 1000 yards Honry (Chr_ftchurch) headed the list with 33, followed by Hyde (Opaki), Barkle (Suburbs) and Bolton (Amberley) each 32. There were three 31's and four 30's in tho 800 yards. In the afternoon there were eight possibles—Speck (Stratford), Aston (Karori), Nicholson (Petono), Barklo (Suburbs), Dowar (Ohura), James (Okawa), Hastings (Hanraki). and Letham (Akarana). L. Loveday, who shot so well at Bisley. got 34 as did ex-champion R. J. King. AL 600 yards honours were high for Canterbury, the first five men being from that province. Theso were Walker and Guiney (Christchureh), and Smith (Geraldine), who each got a Bissible; Wilson (Christchureh), and ryden (Kaiapoi), each 34. Henderson (Sounds), a member of the last Bisley team, also got 34. In the, 1000 yards match, Dickson (Milton) put up 34 and received first place. C. J. Bollard (9th Regiment) also put up 34, but lost tho count. • Lane (Akarana), Manley (Opaki), Barklo (Suburbs), each scored 33. >
