■ , . THE DAVIS CUP. ! AN AMERICAN VIEW. A private letter leoeived in Melbourne from a well-known lawn tennis enthusiast in the United States contains some interesting remarks on tho xesuli of the Davis Cup contest, which afford a different view of American feeling- regarding- these matches' than the cabled utterances of Mr L. H. "Wai-ner, who considered that the matches should bo played in America if America was expected to compete annually. The views of Mr Mercihew, the genii canon referred to, are:—Tb« outcome of the Davis Cup matches has increased our respect, for Australasian tennis, although this was already very great. "We are, of course, •in "the dark. as yet as to what really happened, as ; only the ■ scores of the matches have xeached us. "Wo must ta_e oflE our hats to Brookes, and we congratulate you upon tho splendid success of your efforts to defend the cup. As for myself, lam in favour of keeping: on trying for. it until tho •end of time, and I shall endorse a resolution to that effect at the annual meeting of our *s9oci_tion."
