Tho tariff situation in the United States is beginning to arouse considerable interest in commercial- circles. The tariff programme in the Senate will be framed after a conference of the Democrats, Progressive Republicans, and Begular Republicans, early in 51 arch. Thfe House Committee is stilt considering the revision of the eteel tariffs. DESIRE FOrTmORE SHIPS. President Taft, addressing a peace mooting, said the time had not irrived to be economical at the expense of naval establishments, and expressed n'strong desire that Congress would anthorisQ the building of two new battleships. Such an action was necessary in order that America should keep up with other nations' plans. The completion of the Panama Canal would doable tho efficiency of tho Xavy, and it would th£n be time to consider economy.
