FIFTH TEST MATCH.

j A CENTURY BY WOOLLFA". United Press Association —By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright. I SYDNEY, February 24. The fifth test match was resumed to-day, in dull weather. At the close of play on Friday • the English had 201 up for the loss of six wickets. "Woolley and Vine resumed batting to the bowling of Macartney and Hazlitt. There had been heavy raiu during the night, but the wicket was not seriously affected, Jieing slow and easy. Woolley added one, and then gave mi easy chanco to Gregory at point, off Hazlett, but tho ball slipped through his hands. After feeling for the bowling for a few overs, tho batsmen played with greater freedom than yesterday. Two hundred and fifty was hoisted as a result of 302 minutes' play, and 12 runs later the total for the* partnership reached 100, the result of 93 minutes' play. YToolley batted confidently, and brought up his century at the end of 151 minutes. After trying Hordern and Armstrong, two slow bowlers, together, Hill put on McLaren and Minnett, both fast. Woolley and Vine were still together at the luncheon adjournment, the sco.-o being 202. After lunch, Hordern and Hazlitt bowled. Tho former's fourth over saw the partnership, which had added 1-1-3, broken, by Vine being bowled by a yorkcr. He batted for 147 minutes, and made 36. Smith was bowle-i second ball by a "googlie." which evidently deceived him. Barnes, at o, cut a twisting one from Hnzlitt to Hordern at point, and tho catch was held. When Hitch, tho last man, came in, Woolley started to hit recklessly. Trumper should have caught him in the deep field off Hordern at 130, but the miss was on a par with tho fielding of tho team as a whole, which has been wretched. Hitch not last long, being caught by Hill ofF Hazlitt, near the boundary behind iho bowler after making 4. Woolley carried out his bat for 133, scored in. 215 minutes. Ho hit twelve fours. By comparison with his associates i;o was brilliant, but only by comparison. Trouble set in early for tho Australians. Gregory and Trumper opened to Barnes and Foster. Tho" first ball of Barnes's second over Truraper tipped to Woolley at third man, nnd Woolley made, a good catch, almost on tho ground. Hill followed, and •e----ceived a tremendous ovation. Tho crowd stood as one, and cheered and clapped for fully five minutes, showing that they supported him in tho controversy with tho Board. Ho quickly got going, and 50 appeared in 45 minutes. At twenty, Hill touched a bumping ball from Hitch, and Smith, behind tho wickets, did the rest—2 for oU. When Armstrong wont in play slowed down, and when 22 had been added Gregory, in attempting to cut Douglas, 'sent tho ball straight to Gunn at fine slip. Afinnett followed, but was out without scoring, and the Australians' chance looked gloomy. Ransford filled the. breach, and the two Victorians carried tho score to 100, as a result cf 113 minutes' play. The play was dull, Ljth displaying great caution. Ransford, however, opened out to Foster, and lifted him to tho track, and the next ball ho pulled'to leg for 3. A quarter of an hour before tiinn Armstrong was out leg before to Barnes—s for 134. Tho light was then bad, and play J™s stopped. Tho attendance was Scores:— ENGLAND. First Innings. Rhodes, b Macartney .. ..„ ..8 Hobbs, c Eansford, b Hordern ..32 Hearne, c Macartney, b Armstron" ..
