ATHLETICS.

FINE MEETING AT LANCASTER X'AIiK. An athletic meetins, under tho nus.pices of the Canterbury Centre of tho .New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, was hold at Lancaster Park on Saturday afternoon. The going was good, and the weather conditions such as to neither help nor hinder the runners. The spectators may have numbered. 200. They were treated to several fine- exhibitions of running, but had to put up •with sundry dreary delays. The officials did not seem to realise- that tho periods of waiting, though they might bo brief, were always tedious. And any attempts at announcing the results proved abortive, and left the on-lookers in comparative ignorance of the result. Opie appeared to bo in good form, and ran his races well, finishing particularly strongly. His time, 9 4-oth roc, for the heat of the 100 yards handicap, equals the New Zealand record established in 1891. Tho track was surveyed on Friday evening and meaeured a<jain on Saturday night, while the timekeepers were all agreed, so that tho recommendation that the performance should be recognised as a record should bq favourably considered.
