PERSONAL ITEMS.

Lady Islington visited the Xasareth Homo and Mount Magdala Home on Wednesday. She was very cordially received, and came away with, very pleasant impressions of both institutions. Lord and Lady Islington attended tho tennis tournament yesterday afternoon. Sir Joseph Ward, with Mr Hislop, Private Secretary, arrived from Wellington yesterday, and left for tho North last evening. Sir Joseph may return to the South in order to attend the Bluff Regatta on January 2nd. Mr James Allen, M.P., arrived in Christchurch from tho South by the first express last evening. Mr and Mrs J. A. Frostick left by tho Mooraki yesterday for Sydney, on their way to England. Lieut.-Colonel Burnett-Stuart left for Wellington last night. Messrs R. McCallum, M.P., H. B. Lusk, and M. J. Gresson and tho Rev. J. E. Keir left for Wellington by the Maori last night. Mr Hannay, stationmaster at Lyttelton, is retiring, and Mr E. Dobbie, of Invercargill, is being promoted to tho vacancy, whilo Mr Bean, chief clerk at Lvttelton, will take charge at Invercargill. Tho Rev. Mr Clarke, Messrs J. E. Redpath, D. McFarlane, J. D. Lynch, T. W. Reese, R. M. Turnbull, and F. B. Logan arrived from Wellington yesterday. The Rev. John Craig leaves to-day to spend a short holiday on the West Coast. From tho Coast he goes to tho North Island. Recent arrivals in town include: — Mr J. C. BidwilJ, Mr J. Wilson (Feathersten), Mr and Mrs A. H. Fisher, Mr H. Gilbert, Mr W. Gilbert (Duuedin), Mr G. Johnson (London), Dr. and Mrs Tolhurst (Wellington), Mr and Mrs Stevenson (St. Leonards), Mr A. M. Ongley (Fcilding), Mr A. Bundle (Dunedin), Mc - G. Rutherford (Dalethorpo). On the occasion of her approaching marriage, Miss Margaret Morrison was j presented with a silver tray by the North Canterbury Women's Teach?rs' Association, for whom she had acted as hon. secretary for some years. Miss Morrison was also presented with a silver cake stand by the teachers of the Waltham school, and with a silver j vaso by the pupils. Mr H. G. Payne, bte organiser of the No-license League, left for Sydney by the Moeraki yesterday. On Wednesday evening Mr Payne was entertained by tho members of the Church of Christ, and presented with a letter of esteem, accompanied by a cheque. Mr Thomas Browp returned to Christchurch yesterday from Sydney by tho Manuka. Dr. F. W. Pennefather, of County Wicklow, Ireland, who was private secretary to Sir William Jervois when i he was Governor of New Zealand, and subsequently acted as a puisne judge of the Supremo Court dunn_ the absence abroad of Sir Joshua Williams, is a visitor to Wellington. He intends to make a motor-car tour ir. the North Island'early in the New Year. Dr. and Mrs Salmond, of Dunedin.

celebrated their golden wedding on Christmas Day, having been married at Dunfermline on the 25th December, 1861. The guests were limited to relatives, and they were sufficient to fill the house. There survive four sons and four daughters. There are sixteen grandchildren; and, besides, various members of correlative branches of the family. Tho venerable couple were the recipients of many tokens of love and gratitude, and of numerous congratulations of friends. Not the least appreciated was a cablegram from the congregation in North Shields to which the Professor ministered for seventeen years nrevious to his arrival in the Dominion, where he has resided for thirty-six years.
