MAGISTRATE'S COURT

(Before Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. Ono male first offender for drunkenness was lined ss, in default twenty-tour hours' imprisonment. James Brown, who had been convicted at Methven on a charge ot drunkenness recently, was romanded for one week IDLE AND DISORDERLY. George Humphries, alias Henry John Humphries, alias Gordon (Mr Donnelly), pleaded not guilty to a chargo of being an idle and disorderly person having insufficient laAvful means of support. Detective Osborne gave evidence that accused spent his days in hotel bars. Witness had visited the place where accused lived, and there had found accused, his lather, and a prostitute, all hopelessly drunk. Detective „mow gave similar evidence. Sergeant Jackson stated that the house was a nuisance to its neighbourhood Mr Donnelly said that accused had met with an injury in tho course of his work which now prevented him Irom working. Accused was convicted, and ordered to come up for sentence when called on. FAILURE TO ACCOUNT. James Leathwiek, a youth, seventeen years of age, for whom Mr Cuningham appeared, pleaded guilty to charges ot having received and failed to account for various sums of money, in all £l(i 19s Sd. the property of Messrs Ford and Had field. Mr Cuningham said that accused had borne a good character. Tho moneys taken had been rents which ho had collected. Chief-Detective Bishop stated that tho boy's record, apart from these was a good one. His Worship ordered accused to come up for sentence when called upon, and ordered him to make restitution at tho rate of 7s 6d per week to his father, . who had offered to make restitution. BY-LAAV CASKS. John O'Connell was fined 5s and costs for having left a vehicle unattended without lights. Michael Mooney was fined 5s and costs for having allowed two horses to wander on a public highway. FAMILY DIFFERENCES. On the application of Clara Elizabeth Hughes (Mr Johnston), Richard Hughes, her husbar.d, was bound over to keep the peace towards her for six months in his own bond of £10, and to pay costs Elizabeth Olsen charged her son-in-law, Shik M. Din (Mr Hunt) with assault. Both parties gave evidence at great speed and considerable length. His Worship dismissed tho case. ALLEGED ASSAULT. John Fitzpatrick (Mr Brown) charged John iScarschawski (Mr Donnelly) with having used threatening language and having assaulted him. After evidonco liad been heard, his Worship convicted the defendant and ordered him to pay the coste. (Before Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M.) YOUTH IN TROUBLE. Angus Allardyce Russell, a youth, was charged with stealing £1, the property of his mother, at Sydenham. She stated that he was getting out of hand. The Magistrate formally sentenced him to a month's imprisonment, and ordered that ho should bo kept apart from other prisoners. His Worship said ho would recommend the Governor, .under tho Industrial Schools Act, to send tho lad to an industrial school. AFFILIATION. George Henry Hughes (Mr Donnelly) denied the paternity of an illegitimate , child. Mr Gresson appearea for the complainant. After a hearing lasting more than three hours, the information was dismissed. ■•••'-
