OBITUARY.
. MR E. G. H. MAINWARING. <Mr Eugeno Georgo_ Henri Mainwaring, who died fn this city yesterday, was well-known throughout .the Dominion, having held positions in the Civil Service for a number of years, Mr Mainwaring was tho eldest son of Admiral Mainwaring, of "Whitmore Hall, Staffordshire, anu came of an old Staffordshire family. Mr Mainwaring was an interesting link with the past. His father, who was born in 1773, entered the Royal Navy at the age of thirteen/and fought under Nelson with distinction at Trafalgar, the Nile, and tho Siege of- Copenhagen. His mother was one of the ramous entourage of tho Court at Weimar with the immortal Goethe and a daughter of Colonel Chevillard, who lead the French Carbineers, under Marshal Ney, at Waterloo. Mr Engene "Mainwaring came to New Zealand in the ship John Hazilton in l&W. and went in for sheep-farming in Otago. which did not prove profitable. Ho joined the Public Works Department, under Mr C. Y. O'Connor, and*" worked tinder him on tho West Coast at the time of the rush, and on the southern railway in Canterbury. On tho completion of tho lino he -was Temoved to the Railway Department in Wellington, wherd he worked until Jus retirement a few years ago. Binco tfien be resided in CuristchuxcL
