ALLEGED CRUELTY TO DOGS.

A case of alleged neglect and con- ' sequent cruelty to three dogs wae on Friday brought under the notice of Mr W. H. Zouch, secretary and inspector of the Society for tho Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. '" | Tho facts alleged are that three dogs ■ havo been chained-up at the railway station, in tho place provided for the purpose by the authorities, for a lejKi-thy period without being regularly fed. It is said that the dogs were at the railway station for three or four weeks, and that all that they got to eat was provided by one of the porters. A lady noticed that one of the animals ■was lying dowitt, ' and .was, in fact, j dying, and she sflobe to a gentleman; who brought $he matter under Mr Zouch's notice. ".; A.police constable put ono of tho doge out- ad? its agony.; ono ■was taken by a railway employee; and the third was taken by Mr Slouch. Thia animal was seen by a representative of "Tho Press," and it certainly looked as if it was on the verge of starvation. It was very emaciated, and was just able to drag itself along. It is not knowji who left the dogs at the railway station, but it seems strange that they should have been left for a long period without somo action beinu taken in regard to them. .. * v The railway authorities on being seen regarding the matter, stated that their attention was called to the dogs hist Wednesday, and instructions were usued that they should be fed, and, that was done. The dogs were not officially in the hands of the railway authorities, who do not know who put them on the railway premises or how long they have been thereon. The railway authorities do not undertake to store dogs as is done in the case of luggage, but if dogs arrive by train and are not claimed, they are kept and. fed at the owner's expense. The three dogs did not arrive by train. They were sheepdogs, ana very quiet, otherwise they would have made" their presence known before it was discovered. Enquiries are being made with the v:ew of ascertaining to whom the dogs belonged.
