MR McCOMBS'S CANDIDATURE.
■ On Saturday night 3lr J. McCombs addressed a largn crowd at Barns's corner. Richmond. -Mr J->. 0. Sullivan presiding. Tho candidate dwelt r.t length on tho desirabbty of proporton.il representation being established There was too much Cabinet rule, too much oTTe-man Ho ailv Tocated a more vigorous settlement •■>! the land, and said bo was strongly in iavoiir of -a leasehold policy as tar ns the remaining Government lands worn concerned. Tho Customs duties should \ be revised, with a view to making the commodities of life cheaper, and tho resulting loss in revenue should bo roado ut> with rjrndunted land tax. He favoured the Conciliation and Arbitration Act, but thought the President of the Court should bo a capable businessman, who would bo more in touch than a judge with the conditions of labour. A statutory minimum wa«e should be fixed by the Government. Ho was opposed to the Compulsory Defence Act. On a stra ghc-out no-confidenco motion he would support the present Government as against tho Masscy - Party, but in the ovont of a no-confi-denco motion taking the shape of a , measure wliich he favoured he would support the party that brought forward tho measure. Tho candidate was accorded a vote of thanks and confidenoa, 'carried with one dissentent, and received three cheers.
