TO THE ELECTORS OF RICCARTON.

OWING to untrue and misleading statements made by unscrupulous persons who are informing the Electors in various parts of the Riccarton district that when 1 first ttood for Parliament it was as an Op-poaiticnit-t, and that immediately alter election I changed my coat and became a follower of tha Government, and; further, that I was then in favour of giving Crown tenants the right of acquiring the freehold at tho original value, I pub'ish below a copy of the lenflet which I i«su«l two months befcie the election, and of which I distributed 4500 copies throughout tho electorate.. This is a sufficient refutation of the falee statements which n.re bein?' industriously circulated by interested parties, and shouVi put a stop to any further perversion of tho truth. 1 clßim tliat I havo strictly adhered to every pledge which I havo made, and I challenge my detractors, beth individually/ and tively; to prove that I , nave broken or strained any of my pledges.—l am, yours faithfully, GEORGE WITTY. "Tumpleton, December Oth." TO THE PiLECTORS OF. THE RICCARTON ELECTORATE. Ladies and Gentlemen,—ln answer to a largoly-signed requisition* I am a Candidate at the forthcoming Election, and as it is impossible for mc to se© every elector, I take tho liberty of placing before you tome of my views. I am a supporter of the present Government in all measures that arc for tn« good of the community. So long as they support the weak tney will have my earnest ' attention, but I would opporo strongly any meaoures that in my opinion would not boncfit tho people, no matter by what party brought forward. Education. —Aβ regards the education question. I believe ii. the present system of its being "Free, Secular and Compulßorv," and fnvour the Ertcmsion of Technical Schools. It seems absurd to import oiir experts f:om other countries, when, we cou'd educate our own. All branches should be open to competition ri?ht up to the University, and entrance fhould be by merit only. Elective Executive. —I am in favour of an Elective Executive, an Elective Upper House over, a wider aTea, and also of tho Rrforendum. I would Fupport a State Fire Insurance scheme, as it wou'd be a benefit to the people, but it elould not be mndo compulsory. Th« Workers' Compensation Act .should be made to apply to all Government workers who do not come under any other scheme as well rs to private individuals. Land Tenure.—While I am a firm believer in the Freehold we must have a mixed temuro. Put the Peop'e on tho Land by whatever tenuro you like, so long as it betters their condition, and by doing so betters th'e condition of others ; but aggregation under any system should not be allowed. The late Sir John McKenzie's land policy has been a boon to the pocrole of New Zealand, and the repurchase of large estates for cutting-up purposes wi'l havo my hearty support. I would not do away with his land policy by allowing it to bo made freehold, but am in favour of allowing tenants to pay a certain amount of their holdings, and thus reduce the vent V> a nominal sum. Tho money thus obtained should be ear-marked for the further purchase of land for settlement, thus saving tho necessity of borrowing for tho above purpose, and, in one sense, creating a State. Bank. Land should be bought in all congested districts for Workmen's Homes. I would oppose revaluation, xiorrowing.—l am Opposed to ExoeFsivo borrowing, but we are a progressive community, and so long as we borrow for reproductive works, such as Land for Settlement, and Completion of Main T'link Lines, etc., I would not oppose anything that would benefit ■ the present.'or. future jjenerafons. Old Age Pensions.—l am in favour of tho O'd Age Pension Scheme, end would rather widen its operations than curtail them. Conclusion.—ln; conclusion, there' are mnny subjects that I havo not touched on, but am prepared nt any time to state my. views in. reference to thorn before the public. I have been a settler here for twenty-seven years, and havo taken n keen interest in all public matters. I have filled every position, from a School Committeeman to a Connty Councillor, and haveWver sought election, V.it ench time I stood'at the request of the people. "Having a stake in' I7ew Zealand, I am not a carr>et-bng politician, and if elected I will lerdoftvour to ure rnv'abi'ity to further tne intereete of trie people in this the best little country on earth under sood management. I have to gain the confidence of the Electors •by beiny thoroughly' straightforward.—l am, lddici end. pentlenlMi, yours faithfuTly, GEORGE WITTY. Templeton, Sept. 23rd, 1303- 3174
