MELBOURNE, December 8. ■ At tho annual meeting of the Kauri Timber Company the report' was adopted. The Chairman stated that since the close of tho financial year the Company had secured a fair quantity <jf fresh bush, which would absorb some of the cash, in hand. Referring to recent alterations of the tariff, tho effect would bo to raise the price of butter boxes os, by producing better grades for butter business, they would ft© compelled to make a large quantity 6tiltablo only for fruit cases. If tiie market for this class were restricted, or taxed heavily, tbo price of better classes would have to be raised to compensate for tho loss on the lower grades. Th© outlook for tho current year was encouraging. There were good enquirien for forward business, and the Company expected to pay a half-yearly dividend in June. Tho National Mortgage and Agency Company, Ltd., report on tho grain market as follows:— "Wheat—-The position is practically -iichanged since "last week's report, as enquiry is limited, while very few parcels aro offering. Prices are nominal. Best Hunters and Tuscan, 3s od to 3s 6d: best Pearl and Velvet, 3s 6d to 3s 7d, on trucks stations.. Oats—For any lines that are held, farmers aro asking extreme prices, which are only obtainable whero the ■parcels are bought for retailing. For shipping coastwise, buyers' ideas are about 2s lOd per bushel, on rail. st_slions, for good Gartcna ' ChafF--I>emand is slack, and thero fa not much enquiry at present. Prime is nominally worth 80s per ten, on trucks.
