Tho campaign lor the Ashburton t>eat was opened in tho Theatre Royal tonight, when Mr John McLachlan. who announced himself as a supporter of-the Liberal Government, addressed an audience of about seven hundred people. I The candidatq spoke on traditional lines, recounting in extenso the beneficent legislation placed on the Statute Book by the Liberal Party during tbe last twenty years. He also warmly denounced tiie Opposition and all its works, _ hurling fiery invectives at tho party in general, and at MV Massey in particular. A voto of thanks was carried unanimously. Tho "News" publishes aa article and editorial comment thereon, regarding a split in the local Labour Party over tne candidature of Mr Farrant a_ the Labour representative for tho Invercargill seat at the general election, ft has been an open secret for some timo that Mr Farrant has not had united Labour behind him.
