GALE ON THE COAST.
A boisterous southerly gale camo on to blow at Lyttclton during Saturday night, and yesterday the weather conditions were very wintry. Heavy rain fell during tho night, and there were several showers yesterday morning. The unusual sight of snow in November was to bo seen yesterday morning, there- being a light coating on tho summit of Mount Herbert. Tho sun shono out during the morning, nnd the snow or sleet onickly disappeared. The galo made its force felt along tho coast, and steamers bound to Lyttclton wero delayed. Tho Union Co.'s collier Kini met tho gale off Kaikoura, nnd had a dirty passage to Lytfcelton. The N.Z. Shipping Co.'s big steamer Turakina. which was in light trim, was eichtoen hours on tho passngo from Wellington to Lyttelton. Tho ferry steamer Mararoa was a Into arrival, nt L.vttelton yesterday. She left Wellington at 11 p.m. and encountered a strong south-east sale and high sea after passing Capo C.Unpbpll. She arrived at Lyttelton at 2.10 p.m. yesterday, after a passage of fifteen hours.
