THE INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION.

WELL ATTENDED YESTERDAY

Thero was a satisfactory attendance at the Trades and Labour Council's Industrial Exhibition in the Olympia Rink yesterday during the day time, and a very good attendance in the evening, considering that it was an. "off" night. A successful concert was given:under the direction, of Mr J. T. Macleodsmith in the evening. The judges hay© been appointed for the compeutions instituted by tho Typograpmcal, Carpenters . and Tailors' Unions, and it is expected that the judges for the iron-worK and engineering classes will be selected today, and also for tho carving and caoinetmaking. . _ Mr G. 0. Moon, of the Tourist Department, yesterday placed fivo stags' beads on tbo wall opposite the secretary's office. The oentro ono ia a very fine head from liakaia, and there aro three splendid heads from Otago. All these are the property of private owners, who hay© lent them to I tho Tourist Department for exhibition purposes. Close by these trophies of the chase are two oil-paintings by local, artists. One is entitled "Napoleon in Exile," painted by Geoffrey Yenning, and lent by St. Joseph's branch of the St. Vincent de Paul Society at Lyttelton and the other has for its subject the' relief of -Uie, Discovery by tho Terra Nova and tho Morning. This latter picture is tho work of Mr A. O. J. Cuddy. , The judging of tho needlework competitions has not yet boon completed, but it is anticipated that Mrs W. Ensom, who has been appointed to adjudicate on the entries in theso classes, will finish her task in a day or two. A feature of tho needlework entries is a doll dressed hy some forty children in the Beoond standard at East Christchurch school. The work of dressing the doll has been carried out. with overy credit, when it is considered that the average age of the juvenile oostumieres who undertook to adorn the young lady is only seven years. Tlie children responsible for this admirable piece of work are under the tuition of Miss McKeown. A feature added to the exhibition is the fat shoop competition. The two animals, which are tho gifts of the Christchurch Oj>erat.ve Butchers' Union, were on view for th© first time yesterday. They are under th© charge of Mr Trowbridge. Youthful visitors yesterday paid great attention to the sheep, which, having been brought up as pets, will readily eat such dainties as biscuits.

A special bulletin is issued every night, printed on the premises. We understand that tho Typographical Society are to b© asked to print a special appeal to the public during carnival week, requesting them to give local products a fair chance before buying any of th© imported articles of the same variety. Messrs A. J. White, Ltd., have decided to change their furnitnro exhibit once a week. Their next display will consist of tho furnishings of a library. Tho Atlas Confectionery Company will also alter their exhibit periodically. A boot's progress from the raw material to the finished article will bo shown on tho screen on Thursday night, when the processes of manufacture as pursued in tho Zealandia factory of Messrs Skelton, Frostick, and Co., will bo shown in a scries of moving pictures.

_ Ono of the attractions of tho exhibition, judging from the crowds surrounding the workers, is tho exposition given by the Moulders' Union of the prooos_?cs of casting and moulding various metals. Last night the metal utilised was brass, and the work carried outconsisted of moulding in sand, the articles turned out 'comprising horses, pulleys, lions, and various ornaments. On Wednerdiy and Thursday nights a moulder will givo on exposition of casting aluminium kettles, the moulding bein__ done on Wedne!**dny and tho casiing on Thursday night. Among the articles displayed in the stall are motor cylinders in iron, which it is claimed are the equal of the imported variety. To-night the Tourist Department will give a display of moving pictures, and will show Hanmer golf_link» and visitors arriving. By special request the picture of the massed bands will be repeated. Miss Trent will give a demonstration of electric cooking at the City Council's stall at intervals during to-day.
