EAST CHRISTCHURCH SCHOOL.

PRESENTATION TO ME S. C. OWEN.

■ The great esteem and affection in which Mr S. C. Owen, until recently headmaster of the East Chrietohurcn school and now one of the inspectors under the North Canterbury Education Board, is held by the School Committee, the teachers, and the scholars was evidenced by the enthusiastic character of the proceedings at the school yesterday afternoon when Mr Owen was the recipient of several presentations. The function was held in the largest room in the school, but it was not, large enough to accommodate all tho scholars. Mr H. F. Drayton, chairman of the School Committee, presided and voiced the regret of all connected with the school at Mr Owen's departure, at the same time congratulating him on his well-deserved promotion. Mr Owen, he said, had been connected with the school for seventeen years, and had been headmaster for eight years. He read a letter from the School Committee to Mr Owen expressing their appreciation of his services and recording the high standard of efficiency maintained by him. On behalf of the committee and of the teachers, he presented Mr Owen -with a handsome travelling bag. -Mr A. C. Maxwell read an address from the staS, in which Mr Owen's ekill as an educationalist and his ability as an administrator were dealt -with. Masters R. B. Batchelor and Carl Zimmerman, on behalf of the boys, presented Mr Owen with a travelling rug, and Miss Chaplin, on behalf of the girls, presented Mr and Mrs Owen with a handsome tea set. Mr Owen, in acknowledging the git us, expressed his regret at leaving the school and impressed on all the desirableness of upholding the his* reputation of the school.
