ACTIVITY IN LOCAL POLITICAL CIRCLES.
The by-election for Christ-church Xorth is already exciting a great deal of interest ni the city. A meeting of Mr J. D. Hall's friends and supporters will be held in the Orange Hall this evening to form a committee to secure his return, and it i.s to be hoped that as many ladies and gentlemen rs can make it convenient to do so, will make a point of attending the meeting. Dr. 'Ihacker has received several requests to contest the Christchurch, Ncorth seat, amongst those xirging him to stand being several prominent Labourites. l>r. Thacker lias not, however, , yet made up his mind whether to contest the by-election or wait till November and contest the Christchurch East seat. If he announces his candidature for the present election it will be as an Independent Liberal, with Government and Labour ♦sympathies. He feels confident that if he stands he should be able to get into the- second ballot with Mr Hall. Dr. Thacker will make a dofinite statement on the matter this afternoon. Mr James Young, secretary of the Canterbury Trades and Labour Council, whose "name has been mentioned a.s a likely candidate in the interests of Labour, informed a reporter yesterday that it was not his intention to stand, as he had enough on hand at present, without thinking of entering the political arena. Mr L. U. Wilson, a local socialist, has definitely decided to become a candidate for the seat, in the interests of his party.
