SWISS VILLAGE FAIR,

Tho Swiss Village Fair organised to raise funds to provide the cast of a mission hall for the Avonsid© parish was officially opened by Mrs Boyle in the Alexandra Hall yesterday afternoon in the presence of a large gathering of assistants and patrons. The interior •of the hall presented a most picturesque scone, the stalls being built to represent tha quaint little shops of Swise villages, while the assistants were dressed in proper Swiss costumes. Each stall was intended to represent a different canton in Switzerland, and tho whole scheme of a national representation wae well carried out. At tho different stalls were on sale a bewildering variety of goods, and the assistants, during the afternoon and again in tho evening, were kept busily employed in attending to the wants of eager purchasers. There were also many side-shows, including a fish pondj in which wooden fish floating in an artificial lake were angled for, those securing catches gaining prizes, a village pump dis■cliarging the duties or an immense lucky bag, a "post office" staffed by a bevy of girls, a soup kitchen, proving its usefulness by its popularity, an "Aunt Sally" the butt of many, and a Punch and Judy Show performed with more than ordinary skill. The refreshment department, located in the supper room adjoining the main hall, •was one of the "star' attractions of fch© Fair. A pretty "Ribbon Rleel" was danced during tho afternoon, while in the evening a somewhat elaborate programme was gone through, some of the items being given in the lower hall and others in the upper. This programme opened with a grand march by etall-holders, assistants, and performers, all in fancy costume; then followed selections by the Pipe Band, under I>rum-major A. M. Saundors, a "Poster March" in the Victoria Hall, the tab'eau "Guinevere," organised by Misses M. Cuthbert and M. E. Crichton, an entertainment by the "Gipsy Revellers," tableaux "Mv Pretty Maid." organised by Misses Park, Russell, PMiins, and Pinwill, and "Christmju! Balls," organised by the same ladies, a harem skirt dance by Misses Henderson, Mills, and Henley, and a minuet dance. Tho items were novel and entertaining, the work of the "Revellers" particularly being much appreciated. The Fair will be open again this afternoon and to-night, and for this evening another attractive programme has been arranged. ! The stall-holders are as follows:—
