THE LATE KING EDWARD
MEMORIAL STATUES
United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, July 17. The King Edward Memorial Committed has decided to place a statue at tho Piccadilly end of the Broad Walk, in Green Park. The King, Queen Alexandra, and the Government approvo of this, and also of the erection of a statue in tho East End. An Advisory Committeo has been appointed to obtain a design and to select a sculptor. A proposal to select a sculptor by competition was rejected.
Thb original design, submitted a few months ago, was to erect a statue in St. James s Park, the scheme involving tho removal of tho present bridge and the erection of a better and moro ornamental one. Mr Bertram Mackennal was to be the sculptor, and his idea was to havo a group of statuary, figures of Peace, Britannia, etc., to be surmounted by a statue of the late King, 14ft high. This schemo was strongly opposed, on the ground that it trenched on tho sylvan beauty of St. James's Park, and that an elaborate memorial was out cf place there.
