BOROUGH COUNCILS.
■• ♦ ■ KAIAPOI. The fortnightly meeting of tho Kaiapoi Borough Council was held last evening. Present—The Mayor. (Mr It. ylie) } and all councillors. The New Zealand Acetylene Gas Company wrote pointing out that the Council had agreed to purchase all carbide from the Company, and stating that a claim would be made for loss of profit on the supply obtained elsewhere. There was also a question of 21s charged for gas connections which the Company would have to increase in price, and both matters the Company wished to refer to arbitration. The matter was referred to the Lighting Committee. It was reported that a sanitary inspection of the borough had been commenced. Receipts £122 8e 10d, debit balance £200 11s 2d, accounts for payment £122 7a 9d. A deputation headed by Mr C. Ching presented a petition signed by 167 persons, asking for a public meeting to discuss sanitary regulations. The Mayor pointed out that the petition should have been signed by three-fifths of the burgesses. Sir Ching said that they wanted that owners of property of over half an acre should be exempted from the new regulations, and contend* ing that the cost of los 6d was too high. The Mayor stated that the new system would only cost 2sd a week, and the matter had gone so far that the Council could not withdraw. It was decided that the petition be received and lie on tho table. Tender of Sir It. Howard, for nigKleoil work, at 10s per home per year, "was accepted. It was decided to obtain plans of the public library and fire brigade station. No information wib available as to when the bridge repairs would be done, as all the timber had" not arrivei!.
