IMPORTANT WORKS IN WELLINGTON. (special to "the tress.") WELLINGTON, May 28. The Uuion Steam Ship Company, Ltd., lia_ just let a contract to' Messrs McArthur and Co., and Messrs McLean and Gray, of Wellington (jointly), for the erection of extensive works at Evan's Bay. The contract prico ia about £21,000, and the. time allowed in which to complete it is one year. Tho buildings which are to be erected on the steel frame principle, and encased in con-unrated iron, will have a frontage of 450 feet, and'a depth of about IDO feet. Tho buildings will contain engineering, boiler making, and machine shora., an electrical department, a sawmill and joinery shop, and a boat buildinß shed, etc. Some idea of the extent can be formed from the fa*>t that something likp 5000 tons of steel girders and joists will he used. The ests-h!:shment of these works will enable a lar-.ti- -*->_ portion of the Union ConmanvV work, hitherto enrried ou+ at Port Chalmers, to be done in Wellington. The Company already has an extensive laundry in course of construction in the samo locality.
