TERRA NOVA IN DOCK.
The Antarctic exploration ship Terra Nova was docked at Lyttelton on Monday to complete her overhaul. An examination of the hull yesterday morning disclosed the fact 'that the vessel's keel ■was damaged by her grounding on a shoal in McMurdo Sound.'The damage is amidships, and the keel has been crunched, and broken by the grinding on tho. shoal for a length of about 20 feet. The timber is splintered and crushed to a depth of, about six inches. On the starboard side of the vessel about eight feet out from the keel, two of the vessel's heavy timbers have also been scored by the contact with the reef.
The damage sustained by the vessel is not at all serious, and she is not leaking. The keel blocks in the doH; have been removed from under the damaged part of the keel, in order to enable the shipwrights to proceed with the repairs. The damaged timber will be cut out and replaced by a new length. The vessel will probably ho in dock for about a fortnight, during which time the whole of the hull will be recaulked and any defects made good. Tho vessel's bottom, apart from the damage mentioned, was in remarkably good condition, although a good deal of marine growth had accumulated since her arrival in Lyttelton on March 31st. The seat of the leak in the after end of the vessel has been located about three feet from the stern post. The cause of the trouble was a three-quar-ter inch hole, wliich had been drilled many years ago, presumably for a bolt, and which had never been filled. A portion of the sheathing which covered tho hole has been cut out to enable a plngHo be put in. The ship's propeller has been examined, and has been found to be in perfect order. The four blades show practically no signs of their frequent hard contact "with floating ice. The vessel's engines and boilers, and the deck fittings, are being thoroughly overhauled, in readinese for the surveying cruise on which the vessel will set out from Lyttelton on July 3rd.
