•WOOLSTON.

The fortnightly meeting of tlie.Woolston Borough Council was held on 'Monday evening. Present: —The Mayor (MY McGregor Wright). Crs. Davis, Gilmore, Goodhcad, Taylor, Newton, Wright, Gimblctt, Graham, and AiilJs. On the recommendation of the Works Committee it was decided: (1) To reconstruct the concrete channel in Junction street in September. (2) v To agree to pay half costs of fence boundary of recreation ground with Mr D. >S. Turner's property. (3) To place screenings on the footpath at Curanor terrace. The Finance Committee reported receipts since the previous meeting £54 4s sd; credit balance at bank—District Fund £41 5s od. temporary Joans £680; credit Public Works Loan £28 2s 8d; Supplementary Loan credit £1620 15s Gd. Tho Sanitary Committee's report recommended: —(11 That the Council arrange with the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board for the sanitary inspection of the borough for two years at £2o ncr annum. ('2) That,' having considered tbe Chief Health Officer's circular in regard to plague precautions, the District Health Officer be asked if he could find a man, and state the cost of a house-to-house inspection of the borough. The recommendations wore adopted. Cr. Wright moved: — "That the Conncii take into consideration the question of the establishment of a fire brigade—a volunteer brigade if possible. In moving the resolution, Cr. Wright stated that he believed that Woolston was the only borough in New Zealand that had no organised body for tho purpose of fighting fires: neither had it any plant nor even a ladder; and in view of tin: large increase in the number and value of buildings, it was time some steps were taken to establish a corps of men trained to fight tiros. The motion was seconded by Cr. Gimblett and carried unanimously. The following wore appointed a committee to yo into the question:—Crs. Gilmore. Goodhead. Newton. Wright, riiid the Mayor. Tho clerk was directed to draw the attention of the police to the number of unlicensed hawker's peddling in the district.
