STATEMENT BY THE PACIFIC MANAGER.

Mr Milward. manager in the Pacific ibr the Pacific Cable Board, has returned from a visit to Canada. Ho says the Board now controls line communication from Australia to Montreal, and has effected an installation which will enable the despatch of cables to be expedited twenty-five per cent.; in other words they will be able to deal with twenty-five per cent- more business in a given time. Mr Milward's mission to Canada was for the purpose of installing apparatus and taking over for the Board tho lino previously leased from the Canadian Pacific Railway. The system can now carry messages over GIOO miles with only ono land line. Under the old system messages required threo handlings. Asked if the innovation was likely to lead to reductions of rates within a reasonable time, Mr Milward said it placed tho Board in a better position in regard to reduced cost. At present the weekly average for the Pacific line was 42,000 words, and figures showed a marked continuous increase. It was conceivable that if the Board increased the carrying capacity of tho cable to a large ertertt and the public supplied sufficient business, rates might be affected. Referring to the All-Rod route, he declared it would obviously be an advantage to have a cable right through to England. The Atlantic cables at tho present time wero practically controlled by American capitalists.
