EDUCATION BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the North Canterbury Education Hoard was held yesterday," there bein_; present: — "Mr C. H. A. T. Opie (chairman), Messrs C. A. C. Hardy, H. Langlord, W. R. Smith, H. Boyd, T. W- Adams, U. ilennie, M. Dalziel, and Dr. C. J. Hussell. A deputation from the St. Albans School Committee waited on the Board with reference to the proposed alteration of boundaries. Mr Colville stated that other committees wero endeavouring to acquire a part of their school district. They had a large school and a large staff, and they were of opinion that any alteration would be a step in the wrong direction. A large part of the district was rural, and many of their children came from the parts it was proposed to take away from the district. The matter was deferred till the next meeting of the Board. The Buildings Committee reported that the Department wrote in reply to the Board"s enquiry to the effect that after providing 3 per cent- for the maintenance of wooden buildings and 2 per cent, for brick and stone buildings, the balance of the grant was available for rebuilding:. Also that the regulations proposed by the Department had been considered by the committee, and it was deemed advisable that committees should continue to look after small repairs, even if due to wear and tear; that the cost of all paper and other stationery used for school purposes should'be included among the incidental expenses, also the salaries of caretakers, but that the whole cost of water sorvice should not be charged to the fund,' the Board's present practice of sharing the expenditure with the committee 7 being preferred. With these modifications the proposed .regulations wero approved. It was recognised that the minimum amount (os Gd) stipulated by the Amendment Act would not be sufficient to enable committees to meet their expenses. Consideration of the question as to the exact amount that should be granted was allowed to stand over. Mr C. A. C. Hardy added that the effect of the new regulations was to transfer to the Boards, the responsibility of pork which should he left to tho individual committees. The Building Committee hoped to'draft a scheme of such a nature that the committees would, if possible, have greater responsibilities, while the Board -vould be merely an administrative body.' Tho report was approved of.
