Dr. Burnett, who had '. made a post mortem examination, stated that death was duo to. hears failure, following a fit of vomiting, and a verdict was returned accordingly. A child, five years of age, named , Jean "Brownlee,,daughter of tho cheese factory ( manager at Barry's Bay, while playing' on the beach on Thursday evening, fell and broke her arm. Sho . was taken to. Akaroa, where Dr. Me-, Jteddie sot the injured limb. ,i Whilst going his rounds in Amberley yesterday.. R. Smyth, a bptcher residing ot Balcairn, was thrown from his carb through his horse bolting. Tho back band of tho harness snapped, allowing the shafts to fall, and -the startled horse careered through Amberley before being stopped.. Smyth was bruised and cut about the face, whilst this horse was .considerably cut about the legs. When the small steamer Wootton was on the point of leaving Akaroa yesterday mor-aing for Lyttelton, a man went on board and pleaded hard for a passage round. Tho captain finally agrj?d to take him, but the man, who seamed to. be suffering very much from tho affects of drink, became very violent, and behaved in an extraordinary manner on board. While getting down from the bridge to the main deck, he fell heavily and injured himself seriously. Tho accident occurred outside Lyttelton Heads, and on tho ar- " rival of the steamer, the injured man was taken ashore and attended to by
Dr. Steven, who ordered his immediate removal to tho Christchurch Hospital. The man, whose name is supposed to be Ryan, received a serious fracture of 1 tho skull, and at three o'clock this I morning was still unconscious and in. a critical condition. His car collided with a tramcar, and he was thrown heavily to the ground. His condition late to-night waa fairly satisfactory. GISBORNE, January 9. James _ Wall, a barman, suffered a sunstroke while bathing yesterday, and died this morning. He was a native of Melbourne. MASTERTON-, January 9. About 9 o'clock this morning an explosion'"of gas occurred in Beban's section.of the' rope road at the State mine- extension, whereby two men named Patrick'Rodden and John Dunn were seriously'humt. They.were working in tho tunnel when the explosion, , the cause of which is not very clear, took place. Work had -been..suspended for the holidays, and was only resumed to-day, and it is thought that the ment went, into the tunnel before the fans had had sufficient time to work effectively. Dunn was badly burned about the head, arms and body, and<is in a critical condition. Rodden was also burned about the head, arms and face, but he is progressing favourftLly.
