The annual camps of instruction for the i-rcsent season are now practically over. The present system terminates on February 28th. when the new scheme will come into operation, and the enrolment of Territorials will commence. In i';e interim Territorial matters will be fairly quiet, and there will be very little happening outside of the weekly parados of the various companies. . The I;' Battery and the Engineers, which have been ''resting" after their annual camps, will resume their weekly parades towards the end of the present month. The destiny of the Chri&tchureh Cycle and Signalling Corps under the i\'c\v scheme has been somewhat in doubt up to the present, but information has at last come forward from "Wellington to the effect that the authorities intend to form the existing Cycle Corps into either mounted or infanti'r brigade communication companies, as provided for the peace establishment of the Territorial forces. At the next meeting of the Officers' Club, papers will he read by Major Jones, of the Kmiineers. and Captain Walker, of the Waimakariri Mounted m«os. The Department has intimated that it will be" at the discretion of officers as to whether they take their mess dress to the camp of instruction or not A squad of Engineers provided the •usual telephonic communications for the Regatta Committee on New Year's Day at Lvttelton. They connected up the judge's box with the boatsheds and the starters' box, and their services ; were jzreatly appreciated by the officials. The No. 2 Company Garrison Artillery goes into camp at Ripa Island for annual training on the 12th of this month. Camn will he struck on January 27th. The leave of Lieut.-Colonel R. Henton Rhodes of the First Regiment North Canterbury Mounted Rifles, expires on January 24th. Lieut.-Col-onel Rhodes is at present on a holidayin Australia. At the recent social gathering of the members of the Highland Rifles Corps. held in Christchurch, the question of having the Highland Rifle Corps throughout the .Dominion formed into a battalion was discussed, the proposal be ; ng that each company should be attached to a local battalion for working purooses, and that the Highland battalion should hold an annual training camp at some centre to be appointed. During the evening a Wellington officer stated that .Major-General Godley. in the course of a conversation, had remarked that there -would be no objection to the Highland Rifles ■ retaining the popular kilt for use. One hundred and tweuty-scven com-! petitors took part in the Otago Rifle Association's meeting, which was a great, success. The prize money amounted to £130. The regulations governing cadets attending the Military College of Australia, for which a number of candidates may be sent from New Zealand, are very drastic and very comprehensive. Among other things it is stipulated that no cadet shall drink any spirituous or intoxicating liquor or bring or cause the same to be brought within the College "or have the same in l-.is room, tent or otherwise in his possession. Any cadet found under the influence of liquor will be" dismissed. Cadets must not enter any place, public or private, where liquors are sold or disposed of, nor any billiard room, theatre, concert or ball-room or anyplace of entertainment in the vicinity of the College without written permission. Gambling, lotteries, and raffles, are strictly prohibited, being specified as serious offences, which will be severely punished. Smoking will be permitted during certain hours and in authorised places. The smoking of cigarettes is at all times prohibited, and c. cadet found in possession of cigarettes is liable to punishment of disobedience of orders. The use of lire-arms, airguns, or saloon pistols is prohibited,, and cadets are on no account to have such articles, or fireworks or exblosives in their possession. i No cadet will be allowed to keep a dog or other animal, or ride at a race insThe R Battery was the only South Island company that sent a team to the Palmerston North military tournament, and they were successful in winning the principal artillery competition.
