(Received January 9th, 12.20 a.m.) OTTAWA, January 8. The Canadian Government has taken preliminary steps in the trado negotiations with the United States. Feeling in regard to the reciprocity overtures with the United States is keen. • NEW YORK, January 8. The Reciprocity Conference opened at Washington. Mr Knox, Secretary of State, was present. An immense mass of details in reference to the tariff schedules will have to be examined. Tho belief is expressed that the most that cart be hoped for from the present negotiations is a convention agreeing to reciprocity covering a limited number of articles.
