THE DISASTER IN TURKESTAN.
HEAVY LOSS OF LIFE.
United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. ST. PETERSBURG, January 7. As a result of tho earthquakes clefts three feet wide have appeared in tho ground at Vyernyi, in Turkestan. Many demented people are searching for relatives. There is not a single house but what was damaged. As many as seven hundred families are homeless, sheltering in the schools and barracks. Many, fearing a repetition of tho shocks, pass the nights in tho open air. The weather is intensely cold.
The ground in the vicinity of Vyernyi in come places rose, and in others subsided. Hugo boulders, lying on tho giaciers or the snowficlds, wero hurled out of position, and many persons buried in land-slides. The roads to Pytralsk are impassable-, owing to the changes in the configuration of the country and the fissures. A later report states that two hundred people perished. Shocks continue to bo felt. PARIS, January 7. Two shocks of earthquake were experienced at Moulins.
