Mr J. R. Trigars. Conciliation Commissioner, sat to-day, with assessors, to 3'car the claims or the Metal Workers' Union. The main claim of the men was for increased pay to l.s II i<l pi.r hour for .-ill labourers, including tradesmen's assistants, strikers, yardmen,, machinists, dressers, and i'urnaeemon, and IV r labourers on tank work, stokehold ' work, and all work heiow main deck inside or outside), Is 2d per hour. The employers strenuously and suci-e.seiully resisted the ■ claim tor increased wages, saying that outside competition in lines of goods previously manufactured locally prohibited any increase of cost in local production. The union finally accepted Is per hour for ;ill class of workers except machinists, who g t Is Id per hour, and thoso on tank and .stokehold work, who get Is •Jcl \yjv hour, without "dirt." money. A preference clause was passed, this ueinj; the- first time in thip. industry. A claim for Is I'd per hour for t'urnaoemen working cupola and annealing furnaces was allowed. All the other clauses were en the usual lines.
