Now that the Union Steamship Company have ronlaced the older boats on the "Vancouver service by fine, new, up-to-date steamers, the route has taken a great leap forward as regard, popularity, and the present voyage oi tiie Makura probably establishes « record both as regards cargo and the number of passengers. She is in both respects a full ship. Captain Gibb is an idea commander, and with a congenial and harmonious body of passengers, the voyage across the Pacific has been full of'enjoyment. It -as generally admitted that the entertainments given were of unusual excellence. Lo J Harrowby is a partner in Coutts and Co.*s Hank. He is a keen politician, and sat as Conservative member tor Gravesend, from 1898 to 1900, when he succeeded to the title on the death o( his father. Ho married the youngest daughter of the late Right Hon. W. H. Smith, M.P. Lord Harrowby, judging by a speech he made on board, is a ready and forcible public speaker, and comes of a family lon_ known for its interest in polities. Lady Harrowbv and Lady Frances Ryder took part in the concerts on board, the former as violinist, and the latter as a vocalist, while young Lord Sandon did well hi the snorts. After visiting Australia Lord "and Lady Harrowby hope to come on to New Zealand. Lord Harrowby is not a .stranger to the Dominion, having visited it soon after the destruction of the pink and white terraces.' Among the-New Zealand passengers are Major-General Godlev, C.8., the new Commandant, and Mrs Gcdley; Sir Robert Lockhart, of Auckland, Dr. Uarnett, professor of surgery at the Otago University, and Mrs Burnett and family. Mr and Mrs Sydney Johnston and Miss Johnston, of Hawke's Bay; Mr W. Henderson, late representative of the Christchurch Meat Company in London, together with Mrs and Miss Henderson, and quite a large contingent of returning Canterbury residents. These include Mrs nnd Miss Rolleston, Mr and Mrs A. Kaye, Mr and Mrs F. M. Warren, Mr and Mrs J. Ballantyne- and family, Mr Cyrus , ilHams, engineer to the Lyttelton Harbour Hoard, and Mr and Mrs W. H. Trigga.
