THIRST ON SUNDAY.

SHOULD "SOFT" DRINKS BE SOLD ?

United Press Association—By Electric Telegru*>h—Copyright.

(Received December 6th, 11.50 p.m.) SYDNEY, December 6.

A deputation representing religious bodies asked the Chief Secretary to rescind the minute allowing "soft" drink shops to open on Sundays, on Che ground that it was necessary that every toiler should have on© day's rest. Ho replied that he could not alter the order. He believed in a day of rest, but his opinion was that to be thirsty on Sunday was no sin. If tho shops were closed there would bo no place for the people to drink at except horsetroughs and public fountains, which diseased persons might use. It was not desirable to make people carry waterbags through the streets. If Parliament dealt with the matter things would remain as they were.
