NEW ZEALAND SHIPPING COMPANY.
The annual report of the New Zealand Shipping Company gives assurance that there is to be no slackening in the forward policy that has been pursued for so many years. The fine new passenger steamer Itotorua, which has attracted considerable attention at Home and is to be out hero in a few days, is to be followed by another one of the same type, which will be delivered as early next year as the delay caused by labour troubles at Homo will permit. The company are also adding another large cargo steamer to their fleet, and thi* should be available for next season's trade. The new service between Eastern Canada, Australia, and New Zealand represents an addition to tho company's responsibilities, and one which should be of marked benefit to the countries concerned, by encouraging an interchange of products. The attention of New Zealand producers may be directed to the 'chairman's reference to freights charged by the company for carrying wool, which shows that whereas New Zealand greasy wool goes Home at a maximum rat© of seven-sixteenths of a. penny per pound, the rate from Australia is five-eighths of a penny. The company has had) its troubles, like so many other native Colonial institutions, but, as Sir George Clifford claimed, it has always endfeavoured to give its best services, both in passenger and cargo business. It is pleasant to see a New Zealand company enjoying some measure of the prosperity to which its enterprise so fully entitles it.
