METHVEN.
At the invitation of the Rev. H. G. and Mrs Morse a large number of the parishioners of the Methven parochial district assembled at the "Vicarage on Monday evening last, for the purpose of bidding good-bye to Miss Stone, who is getting married and leaving the district next month. Miss Stone has been a regular attendant at all Sainte' Church, and for a number of years acted as Sunday school teacher. The occasion was taken to present the guest of the evening with a handsome bound copy of "Hymns Ancient and Modern." The presentation was made by the vicar, who referred appropriately to the help he derived from Miss Stone in all church matters, and tho loss the parochial district would sustain by removal to Christchurch. Several musical items were contributed during the
evening. The Mount Hutt Road Board, at ita monthly meeting on Monday, was waited upon by a large deputation of the residents of Methven, consisting of the following:—l>r. Golding, Messrs C. A. Cuff, H. Kennedy, Jas. Carr, Hynam, H. G. Hunt, L. Mooar, E. Mahood, and J. McD. Anderson, who asked the Board to bring under tho notice of the Ashburton County Council, wliich is the controlling body, the urgent necessity there exists for fencing in, laying concrete pipes, or otherwise protecting the main water race, which rims through Methven township, to avert the risk of further loss of life. It was pointed out to the Board that the population of tho township was increasing considerably, and that several new 'building-* had gone up lately in close proximity to this dangerous water race, thereby accentuating the danger that ha.s existed for several years p«sfc. The Board promised to do their best to get tho Council to carry out the deputation's wishes. Messrs Morgan and Dickie (two of tho members of the Board, and who are also County Councillors) also promised to push the deputation's claims at the next meeting of the Ashburton County Council.
