"VIA SUEZ."
ADMIRAL POORE ON WAR RISKS. United Press Ainoeiation—By Elactrie Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, November 10. Speaking at the Lord Mayor's inaugural dinner. Admiral Poore, replying to tho toast of "The Army and Navy," referred to the enormous length of ocean highways which had to be considered when onespoke of the naval defence of Australia. It involved main routes comprising about G. 3,000 miles. Tho main route was via the Suez Canal, but he was not sure but that they placed too much dependence on the Canal as a route. It was all very well in " the pining times of peace." but in Avar time that' long stretch of narrow water would have to be guarded against those commerce destroyers which believed in a short life and a merry one. Tho alternative was to turn in time of war to the natural route round the Cape.
