SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
SOUTHBRIDGE. Tho monthly meeting of the Southbiklgc District High School Committeo whs held on Monday evening. Present:—itevs. H. G. Hawkins (chairman) and 11. W. Jackson, .Dr. Withers and Mcssr.s J. C. Free, E. G. Hubbard and It. B. B. Willis. Tho Leestou School Committee wrote, _ suggesting that tho •Southbrid.go ami Leeston Schools should combine to hold an excursion. It was decided that tho secretary should write to the Loos.ton Committee thanking them for their proposal, and stating that his 'Committee hud decided to make other arrangements. A vote> of thanks was accorded Mr Hubbard for erecting a new fence at the school recreation ground. The Committee agreed to communicate with the telephone department, asking for the removal of a dangerous post from the street near the- school. The question of swimming instruction was brought un, and it "was decided that a letter be written to tho swimming instructor, stating that the Committee would like the children to receive efficient instruction during the coming season. The headmaster reported on the attendance as follows:—Secondary deportment— Number of attendances 1]!.)9, times open 47, average, attendance. 25.5 weekly, roll 30. Primary department —Number of attendances 0233, times open 47, average attendance 132.G weekly, roll 152 A number of children had signified their intention of patronising the swimming bath. Advice. had reached him from Mr Foster, Inspector, to the effect thnt of the seven candidate* i>rcs.ented at tho central examination, held at Leeston last week, five gained proficiency eortifirates, ono a complete certificate, while to another no certificate -was awarded. He enclosed an application to the Education Board for a dividing fence and gateway to separate the school gardens from the other portions of the property at the schoolhou.se, and nskerl the Committee to r-i not ion j the application. It was decided to ' support the headmaster's application ] to* the and-that- other matters ' referred to in his letter Vie nxM-ced to The Kaikoura District High School wrote opposing the Committee's resolution agninst compulsory agricultural instruction in "District Rich Schools. The letter intimated that the Kinkoura Committee .supported tlio proposal in favour of tho agricultural instruction given. accounts were passed for payment.
