BOWLING.

CANTERBURY CENTRE. i _____ The Canterbury Centre of the New* Zealand Bowling Association met last night. Present—Messrs T. W. Rowe (president), Brown, Dehny, Halliburton, Borthwick, Angus, Bass, Colville< Henley, Partridge, Young, Chcgwin, Hoe, Ayliug, H. Barlow, Seager, Kiliner, Mathcson, Manning, John Clarice, Brackenridge, and Dr. Gow. Mr J. W. Nicolson resigned the position of auditor. The resignation was accepted with regret, and a voto of appreciation for his services was passed. The Opawa Club wrote, protesting against tho charge made for the recent bowl testing. The Opawa "delegate said that the clubs did not grudge tho fees, but thought that the money should go to the Association or the Centre. —The letter was received. Dr. Gow gave notice of motion to the effect that the office of bowl tester should either be honorary or have a salary attached to it, on the principle that it is better for no individual to have any pecuniary interest in the condition of the running of the bowls tested. Owing to Mr Barnett's absence his notice of motion lapsed. It Wilis to the effect that the resolution to endorse the Canterbury Sports' Protection Association's disqualifications should be icscindod. A letter from the Association explaining its procedure wa.s received. The Lceston Club's application for affiliation was granted. The President reported that tho programme for the tournament commencing on January lGth was very much on the lines of that of the last Dunedin tournament. The executive had decided to adopt a modified two-life system in the. singles, so that each man would have two games in the first three rounds at least. The President stated also that Mr Scott had tested between 400 and 000 bowls, and had done excellent and careful work. Between 40 and 50 per cent, of the bowls had to be altered up to the third week of Mr Scatt's visit, and after that tho percentage was slightly higher. Mr F. Ayling moved, in accordance with notice of motion:-—"That a player, when delivering a howl, must have the whole of both feet on tho mat, otherwise, tho bowl was to be stopped by the opposing side, and in this respect be dead. The foot mat must he not loss than 3 foot nor more than 41 foot in length, nnd not less than 15 inches nor more than 22 inches in width." Mr Ayling produced a letter from the caretaker of a green, in which the writer stated that tho practice of moving feet from tho mat wa s responsible for more than half the injury caused to tho grass on the greens. Mr Young seconded the motion. It was pointed out that at tournament., conducted under tho rules of the New Zealand Association, this system would be optional, as the Association had declined to agree to it. Mr Seager said ho was in sympathy with tho proposal, but thought it impracticable. He moved as an amendment:—"That tho whole of one foot should be on the mat when a player is in the act of delivering a bowf; otherwise the bowl will bo considered dead.'' He said this was tho rule at present in theory, but it was interpreted to moan in practice part of the foot. Mr Manning seconded tlio amendment, and it was carried.
