OPENING 01-' SEASON AT SOUTHBRIDGE. Excellent weather favoured the newlyformixl Soisthbridsre Toiims Club on Wednesday, when the opening of the season took '■ place. There was a very .ircod attendance of i players, intending players, anil enthusiasts, I who all appeared to enjoy tho iiftcrr.eon's i outing. The court, which was used by the ; club that existed in Southbridge a number I of years ;\y.o, End which had of Lite years becoiru> very much out of repair through not ! ten:}; used, was lately repaired, and on Wed- j jicHuav presented a very respectable appear- > nncf. " Thanks to tho energy displayed by tho honorary secretary, Dr. Withers, and tho officers unci committee of the club, everytliisiK was in readiness for the opening. Tho duty of drehiring the court open for play was j performed by tho president, Mr E. G. Hub- j bard. . J Mr Hnbbsrd said that it gave him great i pleasure I" see so many present on the oc- ' casion of tht- opening day. It was somo nino i or ten years since tho former club disbanded, ' and he* was very glad to sec the new club | formed. Tho question of whether a club ! prospered depended upon the members. Ho j hoped ail would work together harmoniously, ! and that the club would have a prosperous j career. Mr Hubbard thru declared the court i open, and in tho unavoidable absence of I Miss Glanville, vice-president, he asked Mrs | 11. McF.vcdy, convener of tho first meeting, ; to ploy the first ball. The cMiirt picsented quite a busy appearance f:ii.:i the time of opening until late in the evening. During the attcmoon the ladies j provided afternoon which was greatly appreciated. (SPECIAL TO "THE PRESS.") "DUNEDIN, November 5. At a meeting of the Otago Lawn Tenuis Association lield last cvoning, a letter from tho Canterbury Association I vas read, agreeing to November 26th as . tlie date for its match against the Otago I Association, and eaying that the match ! could be played on prass omirts. It was ; decided to write suggesting that as the j Otago players were used to asphalt | courts only, they might give a better account of themselves on such courts, but, at the same time, the matter was left entirely in tho hands of the Canterbury Association.
