Tho Duke of Connaught in tho afternoon cabled to the King:—"l have just delivered your message, and in your name declared open the -first Parliament of the . Union of South Africa. I also read your telegram of good wishes, which was received with unbounded satisfaction. The welcomo given to mc, as your representative, is most enthusiastic. All classes of the community havo received mc with the greatest cordiality. The historic proceedings to-day have been . cry impressive, and there is a general consensus of opinion that the now Parliament enters upon its responsibilities under tho happiest auguries, .and supported by the goodwill of all your subjects in South Africa."
