THE GAMING BILL.
. * . An -unfortunato error occurred in the letter, -mritten by Sir George Clifford, president of tho Eacing Conference, to ' the Riverton Racing Club, appearing in 'Tho Press" on Saturday, which spoiled tho sens© of one passage. Sir George was made to refer to "tho curtailment of tho day's racing," trheroas he was really referring to the curtailment of the "days of racing." Wo reprint below tho essential portion of his letter:— "The steady improvement of tho Rules of Racing by tho Racing Conference, especially in restriction of bookmakers end in tho compulsory registration of partnerships, had abolished or cheeked many former abuses until the ekisttaij Gaming Act practically neutralised ttia work so done during- tho preceding twenty years for tho purity of the Turf. If the Bill now before the Legislature passes as reported from the Committee it will reverse this mistake, and we ahall revert to our previous healthier conditions. I therefor© cordially welcome tho new Bill with but minor exceptions, such as tho proposal to limit us to eeren races per diem, which seems trivial. Clubs racing in the long summer days can provide better eport for a more varied type of horse if they hare the additional soope in thoir programmes. Tho curtailment of the days of racing and trotting soeios unnecessary in view of tho diminution of racing which will automatically reeult from other provisions of the Bill, but we can only estimate its effect when tho Commiesioa to bo appointed has done its work. The Bill itself is bo reasonably conceived that w© may feel satisfied that this Commkedon, on which so much will depend, will act in the same spirit and with an impartial desire to benefit our greatest national recreation."
