OPENING DAY,

(PRISB ASSOCIATION TXLXO&AU.) PALMERSTON N„ November 2

Beautiful weather prevailed for tho opening day of the Manawatu A. and P. Association Spring Show, and the attendance was well up to th© records of previous opening days.

The minor classes of produce, poultry, and homo industries, were judged to-day, tho stock divisions cornin) for decision to-morrow. Competition in the three sections mentioned is very keen, and the entries aro rc-iresentatve of a wide area. The show of farmers' separator and non-separator butter is excellent. First awards for separator butter were secured by W. Henson, of Rumai, and ron-separator butter by Mrs J. Baltillie. of Paimerston. The home industries were a strong class. First prize for home-mada bread, twenty entries, -was obtained by Miss Palmer* of Levin.

Tlio annual show of the Manawatu A. and P. Association opened to-day uider most favourable auspices as regards the weather. The entries are well up to the average, though there are more fluctuations in the numbers. The different sections of the home industries and school work show satisfactory increases and excellent exhibits. There are some absentees from the list of exhibitors of sheen, notably Messrs E. Short and Geo. Wheeler in Romnev Marsh, and the Hon. J. D. Ormond in other breeds. The latter is this year exhibiting draught horses and sheep at Christchurch. On the other hand, Messrs G. E. Rhodes in Soiithdowns, AY. Bell in Romneys, and D. Bishell in Lincolns are new exhibitors from the South Island, the two latter being from Blenheim. There are «everal Canterbury men among the tedt-'es. Mr J. S. Rutherford, of Alburv, is one of the judges of light horses, and Mr W. G. Smith, of Weedons, was to have been associated with him, but was unable to attend on account of being unwell, and Mr S. Dobson, of Lowcliffe, kindly consented to .act in his stead. Mr D. Mulholland of Darfield, is judging Shropshire*;; Mr D. Grant, of Temuka, English Leieesters; Mr A. Beattic, of Coalgate, is officiating as one of the judges in tho Romnev section; and Mr J. C. C. Gebbio adjudicated on the pigs. Very little was don© at the. show today" beyond various competitions in riding and driving, of which there was a very lengthy programme.
