« MINISTERIAL REPLY TO MR NORTHCROFT. (PRESS ASSC: lON TELKGRAM.) WELLINGTON, November 1. The Hon. Dr. Findlay, Minister of Justice. intervieAved regarding tho statements made by Mr H. W. Northcroft, S.M., in Auckland yesterday, relatiA-e to political interference with magistrates, said ho Avas utterly at a loss to understand Mr Northcroft's remarks. They came as an absolute surprise to him. During his tenure of office as Minister for Justice no suggestion had ever reached him of anything of the kind. He had on occasions been written to by persons with rises before the Court, but had at all times uniformly refused to take any action whatever, procedure in the matter of an appeal to a higher Court being open to those not satisfied Avith magisterial decisions. "I am quite unable to understand Mr Northcroft's remarks, and can only adk him to mention any circumstances Avhieh would bear out his statements," added the Minister, "for I .know my predecessor in office was just as careful as I have been to see that no outside influence, political or otherwise, is allowed to interfere Avith our judicial system."
