She is a vessel of nearly 500 feet in length, with a beam of G2 feet 9 inches, lino Pakolia is splendidly equipped in every v/ny for the rapid handling of a huge cargo, having cix large holds, four of which aro insulated for the carriage- of frozen meat and butter. The vessel hoe carrying capacity for 105,000 carcases of mutton and 18,000 bales of wool. Tho vessel, which in owned jointly by ilio Shaw, Savill and Albion Company, and the White Star Lino, waa built by Harland and Wolff, Ltd., of Belfast, and is ono of the finest and bc3t finished cargo steamers ever launched by that famous firm. TJie Pakeha, although a huge cargo carrier, is a beautifully modelled \v.y?ei, and is fitted in tho ruoat up-to-dalo manner, and crnoodic3 all tho ideas in tho shipbuilding craft. She hns two sets of quadruple expansion balanced engines, driving twin-sorcwa, and giving the vessel a good turn of speed. On tho passago from London to Port Chalmers the vessel averaged 13.5 knots an hour for 33 days 23 hours, and on the iuu up from Dun&din she made 14.5 knots r.n hour.

The commander and officers are housed iv si large dock house just below tho navigating bridge, and have exceptionally roomy and luxurious quarters. In the large deck-house, immediately below tho officers' quartets, and on tho. upper dee'e, accommodation 13 jirovidod for six saloon passengers, and the after 'tween decks of the ship are so arranged that they can be fitted out for a large number of stwr.ige paP3cagers.
