TIMARU SHOW.

SECOND DAY

VISIT OF THE GOVERNOR

The second day of the Timaru A. and P. Society's Snow opened yesterday under the most favourable auspices. The weather was brilliant, a cool northeasterly breeze having taken the place <f the unpleasant of the previous day. These fortunate conditions prevailed until the close of the function, li , consequence the attendance of the public was exceptionally fjood, and is estimated to be n record. The Society was honoured on .the occasion with the presence of his Excellency the Governor, who, with his private secretary,

If there was one feature of thi* show that merits esuecial comment it was the very tine ring's of draught horses that came before the judges. Th.c only fly in the ointment was the fact that so nianv orixes went out of the district, as the "bulk of the av.T.rds went to rx-hihit-irs wlnsc stud;; were not in the immediate locality of Timaru. Mr \\ . Dunlop, of Pine Hush, a veteran aduidieator, distributed the award; in the section of draught horses devoted t;> entires and -eldin-s. Mr D:ni!rm wprosped the "reatest satisfaction with the horses that came under his notice and nindo soecial mention ot the ;\::«1 entire, two-year-old, and yearling entire classes. the two-year-old clp.<-s he siid that it was a good all-round display, and fairly free from detects in legs and teet, a most import nit point. The championship awards for the best entire went to Air W. Gardner's Maron Fyvie, a horse so well known that comment is quite superfluous. Mr 11. Saundern's Major .Stewart was seeondj and Baron \\ en mc third. In th.c open entire class, Baron Fyvio also annexed the red ticket in a t-la-'s for entire with three of his progeny, with Baton W second. A 'couple of three-year-olds comprised on:,' class, the awards to .Mr J. O"Brien's .Scottish Crown, ar.d Messrs Breen and Grab's Huntlev's Best, who were first and second respectively. -Mr J. rieyl) won in tlio two-year-old entires witli a nice, hay by IJaron Fyvio and in the c1a0.5 for yearlings with Baron's Latdst, another of l'.aron Kyvio's tons. Mr R. Davio annexed tl.'o prizes for geldings, single" and pairs while Baron Fyvie won as tne best walking stallion. Mr Gardiner was .ilso very successful with mares, getting!; the championship with Daisy Ueil, who was also the besr. walker. The ::lass tor dry maro3 was a very l;:rye :iuJ :V>od one, Mr .Shearer gaining first prize and a reserve champien<:lnp wita a Kreat grey, Premier Diamond, a fine stamp of mare. MiTaylor's May Queen won in a class for brood mare" with two of her progeny. The threa and two-year-old filly classes were splendid, both in quality and nuu.I.ers. Mr W. J. Charters of had his work cut out to place tiie competitors 711 these classes. Twenty-six horses were ringed, and Messrs W. Gardiner and W. R. Gray we.ro the icspeetive red ticket takers, both \oungsters heing by Baron Fyvie. Mr f. Taylor, of Ashbmton, won for yearling fillies, Mr \V. Gardiner taking pi ide of in the teams' classes. Mr K. O'Rourke, of Auckland, judged the blood stock, hacks, r-.nd hunters, and was kept very busy all day, doing his work in ;i painstaking nnd conscientious manner. Mr A. 8. El worthy's veteran Finland, who was in first-rate condition was awarded the blue ribbon for thoroughbred stallion in a ring of five, Mr Ma yes's Kenwyn being the re-sr-rv'c. In 'two-year-old colt;;. J. Howey was successful, while in yearlings one of Finland.", son's was awarded the first nrize. Finland was beaten by Mr I\~. Mahoncy's Deerstaiker in a class for thoroughbred entire with three of Ins progeny. No blood marc were entered on the list. The classes for hackneys were very well hi led,

and the generality of the entries showed quality and action . Lcndesboro. Mr John Withell's fcorso, was first for entires Messrs W. Payne M. McLeod and P. Mitten were the prize-winners in the 'classes for younger stock. Some very nice marcs camo before the judge, though the numbers were not very large. Mr J. Robertson got a deserved win in the claa* for mares for brooding weight-carrying hacks. The fifteen, thirteen and okvrn stone hacks' classes wore responsible for -ome pood stuff being exhibited, jind Messrs A. S. Elworthy, R. A. Dix<:n and IT. Elworthy. won the red cards in tbo order named. Mr R. A. Pixon's horse Romulus was also entered in a maiden class of sis, anrl annexed the premier place, repeating the performance in a class for lady's hack atiainst eleven others. Romulus is a bright bay with good bone and a nice free action, and has all the appearance of being a first-rate bit of horseflesh. To Mr H. A. Knight, of Racecourse Hill* fell the task of judging cofc and ponies, carriage stallions and tradesmen's turnouts. The first-named classes brought out an excellent lot. Mr C. Bolund's Pompey got a red card in the stallions' class. A very niccpony was shown by Mr 11. A. Pixon, which won in the class not over 12 hands. Mr A. Jackson's Dandy won in the -under 13i hands, and a pony ot the same name, but shown by Mr D. Grant, won in tho under 144 hands. Mr R. A. Dixon's Nikau was awarded a first in the cob class. In the class for carriage stallions Mr Knight placed Mr P. Mitten's General Wood first, but Mr S. W. Scott's Quincey won in ;.. harness class, the prize being awarded on speed, style, action and conformation. In both classes there were four entries. The tradesman's turnouts were very creditable, the exhibits being brought out in good trim. Mr R. P. Craig won in a half-ton class, while the Belfopl Milling Company were placed first for a class Tip to double the weight. Seventeen troop horses came under Colonel Hawkin's review, Trooper G. Kerslake's Garry winning the 13-stone class, and Trooper T. H. Oldiield's Trixio annexing the ribbon for the best jumper. The hunters' jumping contests were of an exciting nature, and were watched with the utmost appreciation by the crowd. A fine useful lot came out in the maiden eln=w. which was eventually won by Mr L. Hamilton's Rhana. and Mr H. Elworthy's Ironbark was awarded the proud title of the best jumper on tin; ground.

The military competitions wore very popular. Sergeant-Major Edsnr's four of the Sfluth Canterbury Mounted It ills Avon the Ixmi-Lindsny competition, and Trooper Hampton, of the Ashburton Mounted Rifles, the resets race.

Without question the show of cattle, taking them all through, was. the best all-round lot, both numerically and, inor« important still, in point of g?ne.-al quality, that has ever been seen at Timaru for at- least the last twentyeight years. Still, with a few good exceptions, they were not up to what such a magnificent district as South Canterbury could produce, neither was the competition in most of the- classes what it might he in view of the very important part dairying is going to assume in both Mid and South Canterbury. . The shorthorns were a fair average* useful lot, and amongst them there

As with the cattle, the show of pigs ■vvas the iinest which ha;s yet' boon seen at Tiuiarii, with this difference, that tho (liiality of the- pi;.rs for many years has been of a uniformly order of merit. It is not too much to say that out of the !" pasv-t'd <itit of n total entry of 4!) at Eolith Canterbury's .Show would bo hard to excel in any part of the pigworld, and this opinion is confirmed by a piji breeder who has seen all the best herds in the Old Country. One of Mr Clias. Brief's, of Shirley, Christchurcli, took all the main honours in the Berkshire classes, though ±*lr Jl. O. Cox, of tho was successful with a nice sow under six months. Tho Shirley breeder wa.s first in the Berkshire boar cla-ss (open) with his three-year-old Burcot, which heat Mr L. R. vStoddart's •sentinel. Both nnimals were excentionally pigs. Mr H. O. Cox had all the' largo Black Devon classes to himself, and the exhibits wore good. Ho well deserved the first and second honours which were awarded to him in each class. Mr Chas. Brice, who was the only exhibitor of Yorkshires, gained full honours in each class. Tho exhibition of dojis attracted a lot of attention. Mr H. ('•. Broadbead's pug and Miss O. Eiehbaum's Prince Charlie, which wore first and second in tho prize-winning list, attracted a lot of attention, as did Mr J. Thompson's ' exhibit of Black Toy Pomeranians, but, of course, from an agricultural and pastoral point of yiew the working sheep dogs came first. There "wi- strong competition in tho long-hai.-;d and bearded classes, and the sheepdog* as a whole were a good hardy, intelligent-looking lot. iho principal prize-takers in the sheepdog classes were Mr J. Campbell, Miss ivl. Hart, and Mr P.. TT. Trotter. There were half a dozen in the standard or pet collie class, and Mrs J. Thomson's* gieat prize-taker. Roslyn Re.niel, had to concede pride of place to Mr Brown's Handsome Bob. The strongest features in the produco shed were a nice display of butter shown by Mr A. McDowell, of Uaikanui, Miss J. Craig, Miss Belcher, and the Timaru Dairy Company. There was also a particularly good exhibit of cookery in the form of .scones, etc., and some well-made bread. Some wellcured hams and bacon and a few bags of wheat and oats were shown. Tho display of roots was poor. PRIZE LIST.
