BIRDLING'S FLAT.
The new school at Birdling-'s Flat, which is bring erected by the residents.
in the vicinity on an acre of grotind given by Mr T Quealy, is almost completed. The school has been built at the cost of the residents, according to plans approved by the North Canterbury Board of Education, upon the understanding that if an attendance or twelve is obtained the Board will take over the school. The school is a nno little building, built with the latest modern conveniences, and stands close to the railway station. It is that the Christchurch City Council will establish their stone quarries at Poranui, and in that case a dozen workmen s bouses will be built thereabouts. The families of the workmen should supply the necessary attendance for the school. The breaking of the metal at Birdling's Flat, which tho Christchurch City Council intend testing in pursuance ot establishing the municipal quarries there, is going on steadily. Tho metal required for the teet, some 1000 yards, will be carted to the railway trucks and taken to Christchurch, and if it withstands the tests to which it is put, a siding will immediately be put in from the railway station, and ten men permanently employed at the quarry. The siding will only be two or three hundred yards long, and will connect with the Poranui railway station. If the City Council adopt this site for a quarry it will swel! the freight revenue of the Litte River line considerably.
