AN ALTERNATIVE ROUTE.

Sir George Reid incidentally mentioned to Lord Crowo a possible alternative route, avoiding the dangers duo to trawling, via Shetland, Iceland, [ Greenland. and Labrador. Tho route would be no longer than the Atlantic route, and tho ' greatest length between land points would be only 8-jO niiLes. Experts calculated that tho lino could be worked at four times the speed of the Atlantic. Ths?ro was a drawback in having to touch Danish territory, but only wanton mischief would cause the cable to bo cut. except in caso of Avar. .Sir (Jcorgo Reic! ascertained that the onl.v two British-owned cables, the Anglo-American and the Direct United States Company, were on the verge of absorption by the American Telephone and Telegraph Company. Representations have been initiated as to the deferred Pacific rate, and a neeting of tho fable companies and the British Post Office will be called shortly to consider ihe matter.
