THE SHEARERS' DISPUTE.

DUNEDIN, October 11. The shearers' dispute came before Mr Ti iggs and tho assessors at a meeting of the Conciliation Council this meriting, in the form of an application by the Otago Shearers' Union for an award governing the wages of shed hands. Tho parties were unable to oome to any agreement.

Mr McJVlanus, one of the assessors for tho union, said that if tho dispute was not settled a squatter might find difficulty in getting shearers to go out. They waited to deprive a few rouseahotits of some measure of protection, and prolong the time, while they did as they pleased with the rouscabouts. He charged the- sheepownera with coming to the Council in an unconciliatory spirit. The Commissioner said that no recommendation being made by the assessors, the dispute would be referred to tho Arbitration Court.
