Evidence is frequently forthcoming showinj; that tlio teaching profession is graduallj- rising in public esteem, but Intwctor S. H Smith told a story at iSydnry last week, reminisceut of one of Paterson's poems, that ehowed that even yet teachers occupy an equivocal position in the minds of parents. A mother was asked how many children sho.had. and astonished , the inspector by saying that she had five, ;iwo were two> ■were alive, laindi one was a teacher.
