FIRES.

An alarm of lire was given from the Shades Hotel. at 11.22 ,>.m. on Saturday, and the motor chemical from LichSeld street, and' a- horse chemical from Chester street turned out, biu their .services were not required, the boarders in the hotel having succeeded in extinguishing tho outbreak. It a,;> pears ihat the licensee was called up to find a room for a late arrival, and left a ■candle buriiins; in his; own bedroom. During his absence the flame of the candle communicated itself to some curtains, and thence to the mattress on ihe 'bed. The damage done was restricted practically to the curtains and the mattress.

Slade's private hotel. on "Marine Parade, quickly spread to adjoining buildings, and did a large amount of damage before it was subdued. The private, hotel, a wooden two-storey building, containing thirty-two rooms, ■was. wiih its contents, coir.yletely destroyed. A cottago of seven rooms, also owned by Slat;'.*, was flitted. Tho irajority of the boarders lost everything except what they were wearing. George Rymcrs's residence,- a.nd a <x<tt.age- # orcupied by Kdwaixl Ashton, and oVircd by R. L. Williams, f can phi; fire, and were both-completely destroyed. Slade's stables, and those LC John Skew's, cab proprietor, -were also destroyed. Tho horses and vehicles, however, were saved. The insurances are as follows:—Slade's private hotel, £1300 on building in Liver,p i ool and. London and Globe, furniture £6JO in the Australian Alliance. Slade's cot.tace. £200 on building in vhe Xewi Zealand, * and £100 in the Royal Exchange, furniture £100 in the Australiancp Alliance. Wade's stables £100 ii; Lhe Royal Exchange. Skew's dwelling £200/stablne £300. in the Phccnix. Rymer's buildings £700, and furniture £2CO in the National. Ashton's furniture £200 in the Queenslam). , Williams's building £300 in the Alliance. Two of Slade's boardprs, namely, Mr S. T. Jenlcinson and Miss R. A. Midgley. had their personal effects ins-tired for £50 each with *l&o Norwich Union.
