WAIMAIRI COUNTY COUNCIL.
The Wiiimaiii County Council met at St. Paul's Schoolroom, Papanui, last eyeninn. Present—Messrs S- A. Stanles (chairman), W. -I. Walter. F. Siss'on, S. Bullock. J. Hanna, J. Cleland, W. P. Spencer, and J. Basomworth (clerk). The Engineer (Mr J.'Sharpe) reported on various road, flrain, and culvert renewals and repairs. Regarding the North road, it. roc-nircd metalling from the tramway terminus to the Phoenix Hotel, and from tho Riccarton-bound-ary to Belfast. The report was adopted, and it was decided to carry out the work on the North road forthwith. The Clerk reported that the valuations cf the rieiiiv.s were: —Styx £102.331, Belfast £172,827, Marshland £170.202, Papanui £274,300, Avon £153,762, Harewood £317,-149, Feudalton £391,289, Riccarton £447,779, and Mielelleton £372,140, making a total of £2,402,085.
Mr A. Fairhurn wrote offering the uso cf tha pound at £5 per annum. This wa.s accept eel. The Selwyn County Council informed tie.' Council they intended to apply to havo the bridge placed under the control of the Waimairi Council, as it was now situated between the Ashley and Waimairi districts. The Chairman state-el that the Ashley County used to pay two-thirds and the Selwyn County Council one-third of the maintenance. The- letter was received. The Tramway Board wrote, asking if the Council would be prepared to take their road metal from the Board. They pointed out that,they were endeavouring to secure the co-operation of other local bodies which were requiring metal, and they were dc&irous of ascertaining the amount each body used annually. The Chairman stated that he had IUKon it upon himself to say that the requirements of the Council would he 2_eK> yareis ver annum. It was dccieleel to take metal from the Boarel provided the price was suitable. A petition rc*-gar<ling the formation of a cycle track from the Styx to the Factory road was received, md alter consideration it was decided to carry out the work, the engineer stating it would cost about £2... and could be done when metalling and blinding the North road. The chairman. Mr Bullock, and the secretary, were instructed to procure a temporary office and meeting room in the city until the Council's offices are erected. _ A petition was received f,'om ti;t resie'ents of Bli__h's road and Wairarapa road, regarding the footpaths and lighting. The matter of the footpaths was left to the engineer to report. As the gas was not laid on. it was considered the Council could not do anything in the matter of lighting.
